Gran Duo

The duo revolves predominantly around quiet—more rarely dynamically more pronounced—explorations of finely graded sound and noise nuances which, interspersed with numerous pauses, are generated through the interplay and opposition of the two instrumental parts.
The composition consists of movements of individual form and length. In each case, tightly limited sound materials serve as the point of departure for the continuously shifting relationship between flute and violoncello and the resulting evolutionary processes.
The execution of extended playing techniques and special modes of sound production is explained in the preface by means of the corresponding notational symbols.
Duration: approx. 80 minutes
Difficulty: very difficult
Due to its extraordinary length, the duo places considerable demands on the performers' concentration. The variable probing of highly differentiated degrees of intensity and expressivity also presupposes substantial experience in dealing with contemporary music.
